Mechanicsville |

A solo performance in Mrs. McChesney's second-grade class at Mechanicsville Elementary School was all it took. When Jason Mraz was tapped to sing *Silent Night* the die was cast."I knew from that
moment on that I wanted to be a singer," |
Jason graduated from Lee-Davis High School in 95 where he was active in the chorus and drama department High school
years were fun. I was confident. I had strong friends who were creative. We all loved each other and knew we were different.
We loved goofing off and showing our creative selves. Because of that, it made it comfortable to be in school.
"I was Joseph in my Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. I was Snoopy. I was in A Christmas Carol, but I didn't have the
academics to get in to any other college and one thing I wanted to do was get the hell out of my town". |

New York |
 |
Mraz enrolled in the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. It took only a year for Mraz to figure out that, "singing, dancing and acting all together was not
my strength... I wanted to concentrate on singing.". It was also the same year that he began playing acoustic guitar.
"It's your average day in Central Park. This guy was going around reading people's palms,
and I'm totally into that stuff. So I went up and shoved my palm in his face and he grabs it, does the Dead Zone type of thing
and calls me 'youth' -- I love it. 'Youth, youth, you need to get experience. You need to stop asking questions, avoid the
questioner.' And I'm like, 'Yeah!' I don't know what I was on that day or what he was on, but it worked. I thought, 'He's
right. Why do I waste time asking myself questions when I know the answer?'"
In New York my jobs were weird. I was in school for six months so I didn't have a job. But I was a doorman at a really
small retail store. The kind where they can only let ten people in at a time, so I had to be out front to say, 'I'm sorry
you have to wait.' I couldn't let too many people in at a time so people hated me for it. Then I worked at a Barnes and Noble
bookstore. That's where I kind of got into reading because I sat there a lot reading the new age books. But I got fired from
Barnes and Noble so I moved back to Virginia where I worked for the post office, I worked for a fast food place, I framed
pictures, I was a nightly janitor at an elementary school, I ran a tobacco shop, which was my favorite job because for a year
and a half I was the only one there during the day. Hardly any customers would be there so I could take my guitar to work
during that time. I always choose jobs where there wasn't a lot of stress and I could somewhat be my own boss or at least
somewhat creative. Cleaning toilets meant that there weren't a lot of people around but I could turn on my headphones and
harmonize with the vacuum cleaner. It was good. |
Back home in Virginia dreaming of California |
 |
Returning home, he worked for his Dad's fence company and took a trip to California.
In 1999 he applied to Longwood College in Farmville, Va but left without completing the first semester "I went to California for a week and it blew my mind, I had never been out west and there was so much going
on inside me. Then I had to come back to Farmville and I felt like I was in juvenile detention, where there were cinder block
walls and I had to be up every morning at eight. The first day of school they make you start writing papers and I was like
[laughs] "This isn't me!"
"Every time I closed my eyes I could see California. My student loan check came, and all I could was see was "California
California California California ...Pay to the order of California." I went straight to the Wal-Mart, cashed it, and two days
later I was out." |
On the Road to California!!! |
 |
"I heard this voice that said, 'Go to California.' It was freaky -- that Field of
Dreams wake up in bed type of sound. But, remembering the psychic, I couldn't ask myself why. So I'm in my truck and on the
freeway to California. Literally, I'm crying all the way there. I'm in Texas. I've been driving for twenty hours straight
and I'm listening to my Forrest Gump soundtrack and Willie Nelson's 'On the Road Again' comes on.
I've heard that song a million times -- [singing] 'On the road again/Life I love is making music with my friends/I can't
wait to get on the road again' [ Full Lyrics ] -- but it came on, and I just lost it. I'd never heard that song in that way before. I put it on
repeat all the way through Texas. The more I listened to it, the more emotional I got." |
